Aeros and Autos at Ellington Airport (EFD)

Ellington Field had its Aeros and Autos show last weekend. Since it was a billed as a car show and fly-in, I decided to fly but I was flying your typical Cessna 172 – although a great little plane, it was not a show stopper. No problem, I was not there to show the plane.

I had one of my best landings ever! It was a textbook smooth landing. As I was touching down I realized my camera was off! Oh, well.

I guess there were not too many people flying in since I seemed to take the tower by surprise when I asked where to taxi to for the fly-in. I also caught Civil Air Patrol off guard – they were there to direct planes to taxi.

The airplanes on display included planes we usually see around the Houston area at airplane events including airplanes from the Lone Star Flight Museum and an HPD helicopter. There were also a few people with their vintage war birds and that included an L39. My vintage war bird was a Huey that did a low pass run. I think the busiest aircraft was another helicopter that was giving rides – I don’t think I saw it take a break.

The car show included some great looking cars but they were mostly American muscle cars. I would love to see more European sport cars show up at these events but it seems that if you want to see nice vintage European sports car you have to go to vintage racing events. Rarely do you see American muscle cars mixing with European sports cars in great numbers and that is a shame.

I would not mind coming back next year but I do plan to be better prepared with food and water: both were available at the event but the lines were incredibly long (some of my friends waited for over 30 minutes for a bite to eat).
