Mijas, Spain

Mijas, Spain

If you’re in Malaga and you get a chance, pay a visit to Mijas. It’s an old town further inland and with a great view of Malaga and the sea. I enjoyed walking the old streets and viewing the whitewashed buildings.
In a way, it reminded me of some of the old fortress towns that I visited last year near Nice but this one is much nicer and bigger (you can even drive your car thru some of its streets).

Mija’s burro taxiYears ago, before you could drive your car to it, one way to get to this little town was via the burro taxi. They are still there but only to give rides to the tourists.

Another item that grabs the tourist’s attention is the Virgen de la Pena Sanctuary. The sighting of the Virgin Mary is what inspired locals to carve this sanctuary out of rock.

Mijas is also home to many artists and writers so if you’re into artsy things you will find plenty of that here. I was only there a short time and I was more interested in the views of the sea and the architecture but I still noticed quite a few painters displaying their art – I wonder what great artwork I may have missed?

Later that day we drove south to Marbella. It was interesting with its large marina, expensive shops and cars but I will admit that I got more of a kick out of Mijas.
