Coba, Mexico

Making your way down from the top of Nohoch Mul is trickier than getting to the top.
This was my first time in Coba and, considering how often I have been in the area, I can’t believe I had never visited this site before. What a fun place to visit!

First off, the price for admission is very affordable (less than $5), and for what you get, it is one of the best deals going. Because the site is so spread out you have the option to rent a bicycle (what we did) for about $3. I would highly recommend renting a bicycle to see this vast city. If you prefer, hire a bicycle taxi to take you around.

Riding thru the tree canopy and wondering what was going to be at the next turn was almost as fun as climbing to the top of Nohoch Mul, which is the highest pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula.

As I have already implied, you can climb on and explore many of the ruins here. Despite its height and risky climb (the descent is what really gets you), Nohoch Mul is the most popular ruin to climb. When you get to the top you are rewarded with an incredible view of the jungle and the nearby lake. You can also make out some of the ruins in this huge complex.

Coba is only 30 minutes from Tulum so it is possible to visit both archeological sites in a day if you start early enough. Of course, it is also easy to spend an entire day at each of the sites.
