Day Trip to Isla Mujeres

Leaving Isla Mujeres for Punta Sam in Cancun, Mexico Wow! What a difference 10 years can make! Isla Mujeres is much busier than what I remember but it was still a lot of fun. This is a neat little island and you should really make time to visit it. I especially enjoyed walking the streets in the town center – there are plenty of good restaurants to enjoy and some interesting shops. But, I did not come here to shop – I came to do some snorkeling.

Arriving in Isla Mujeres, Mexico Unfortunately, I had planned on snorkeling in El Garrafon after lunch (we had a tasty meal right by the ferry landing). El Garrafon turned out to be the biggest disappointment of my trip because of the high cover charge (about $55 per person!). Yes, the price included your food (but I had already eaten) but even if I was going to eat and spend the entire day there, I still think it is too much. I preferred to save my money for a dive and to head to the north end of the island to play in the water (and you can order drinks at a much more reasonable price).

Iguanas in Isla Mujeres, Mexico Getting to Isla Mujeres: I caught the ferry at Punta Sam so I could bring my car over. Next time I will leave the car in Cancun, catch one of the other boats and rent a scooter or golf cart in Isla Mujeres (it works out about the same when you consider it costs about almost $25 for two people and a car to make the crossing each way). Money aside, space is so tight on the boat taking cars over that you have to get there about an hour and half early to make sure your car gets on the boat.
