Finding an apartment to rent in Paris
Looking for a long-term rental apartment in Paris is very different from what I am used to. For starters, if you go thru an agency, you will most likely pay the agency’s fees which can be as much as a month’s rent. This is what happens when you are trying to rent a place in a city where properties are in demand.
Another thing to keep in mind when you deal with an agency in Paris is that you are limited to that agency’s properties. In my case, I was dealing with several agencies in trying to find the right apartment. This can be difficult because you have to schedule your day and visits with several different agencies.
I also used Craigslist for my search. Unfortunately, most of these ads turned out to be scammers! (Fortunately, I did not lose any money.) They would claim to be working outside of France but their apartment was in Paris. If I would send them money to show that I was serious, they would send me the keys to the home so I could see it. If you get a similar proposition, look somewhere else.
The best and most cost effective way to go about renting a place in Paris or any other city is to rent directly from the property owner.
