Hurricane Ike Refugee – Day 3

My two sisters and their families decided to stay in Houston. We have remained in touch with them and they are all doing well. I did get word from friends that my home looks to be intact. But, like most of Houston, it is without power or water.
I have tried to get in touch with my building’s front desk but the phone there is not ringing. I am thinking that they had a problem with the backup generator or that the phones are not connected to the backup power.
For that matter, I have not been able to reach some friends because they have switched their mobile phones off to save power. I did try calling a few at their homes but those phones are not being answered either – I think their landline phones require power, too, or they are using Voice over IP phones. (I stuck with AT&T and have one simple phone in the kitchen for situations like this.)
Back in Mexico, my parents and friends headed south to hang out on a beach for the day. It is still too choppy to scuba but we did go snorkeling. The best part of this place was getting food and drinks on the beach.
