Malaga, Spain

I was up early this morning to catch a flight from Paris to Malaga. By 4:15AM I was in a cab on the way to the airport. That’s what I get for booking a 6:15AM flight. I should not have been surprised that there would not be much traffic on the roads except for club goers going from one club to another. At this hour, there were still people lining up to go into clubs.
My reward for getting up this early was getting to Malaga early enough in the day to get the most of this interesting coastal town. I am staying with friends but I could not have picked a hotel with a better location: step outside the building, cross the street and you are on the beach. When it is time to sleep, the waves serenade you – very relaxing.
After lunch and a siesta, I head to the beach. Instantly, I run into a Chinese lady offering massages for 20 Euros. I am way overdo for a massage so I jump at the opportunity of a massage on this relaxing beach. That really hit the spot. Afterwards, I was ready for another nap.
Of course, I did go into the water. It was a little cold but that was not a problem. More challenging in getting into the water was dealing with the rocks as you made your way in – I was wishing I had my diving booties. But I pressed on and after a few feet I was stepping on sand.
I am used to Cancun where you see a lot of hotels along the beach. You do see some homes in the older areas of Cancun and there are several high-rise apartments going up but you see mostly hotels in the tourist areas. Here, we see lots of tall buildings along Malaga’s beaches but these were mostly condos and a few hotels.
Malaga is not all tall buildings. If you walk a couple of blocks from the beach you will find old single and two story fishermen homes. They may not have the view of the tall buildings but they have a lot of character of their own. I enjoyed walking the narrow streets checking these old homes with their tiled walls and colors.
I was surprised by the number of Brits here and the amount of business that caters to them. I walked into one bookstore hoping to find a book in Spanish for my mom but discovered all the books were in English. Tuning the car radio, I heard many different English speaking radio stations.
